Why are coastal destinations so popular in tourism? (coursework help!)?

My Travel & Tourism Coursework is about Popular Tourist Destinations in Europe. Coastal Areas being topic 1.

I need to write about coastal areas and give examples, I have already come up with a list of destinations including many spanish areas, some french and others in croatia, cyprus, etc.

What I need to write about now is why they are popular, what features of them are popular, how it benefits the host economy (nationally and locally), and any down sides that there are.

I’d like to make it clear, that this is not the case of, you doing my coursework for me, because obviously I have to write lots, and in great detail. But I’d like your ideas to get me started and to work on.

Please leave examples too if you can.
