i plan on making my own. my baby is 4 months and 3 weeks old. he’s starting to be very interested in the way we act while eating.
also does anyone know any good websites with baby food recipes. and which fruits and veggies are good for babies.

Sorry this is so long…. I hope it helps.
I have 3 boys our youngest is 7 1/2 months and I started 10 days ago to feed him solids. I tried at 5 1/2 months and it upset his stomach, again 6 1/2 same thing. Now he is eating like a champ. Both of my older boys eat all kinds of veggies and fruits and good balanced meals. They also love their cookies and goodies as they call them they often ask for those, but when asked what they want for lunch usually a veggie tops off the list. Salads are a big request at supper time.
What worked for me was starting with rice cereal for 2 days. Then I started with veggies something very bland and soft for me was zucchinies, pelled steamed and pulverized with a bit of the steaming water. I then went to the next veggies that to me were soft and tender and smooth to the palet. Sweet Potatoes, Yams, green beans eggplant. So far I have added broccoli, avocado (this one just mashed) and cawliflower – made some faces so I ended up mixing this one with yams, but I think it was the texture because he ate it tonight on it’s own. With the Eggplants, pelled and steamed, pulverize – dont worry about the seeds, I know it looks weird but it takes really smooth. I can now mix and match a bunch of these veggies. I prep them freeze them in a ice cube tray. then store them in a plastic container. I pull out 3-5 warm them in the same bowl and I pick a bit from each spot and feed him, by the end I am mixing this and that. I also serve him some rice cereal as a sort of desert for now. I also started some plain gluten free krispie/puffed rice cereal, I just give him 1 at a time and he now opens his mouth for more. I give him about 2 tsp at the end of his meal.
I still have so many veggies to try and lots of squashes. Then once I have tried all veggies I can find and prep. I will start with fruits. So far he is eating everything, funny enough it’s helping me have his older brother retry some stuff they have said no to lately like the eggplant and yams.
I hope this helps it has worked for me and my kids surprise a lot of people when they ask for veggies instead of cookies as a snack. – I also have a book that I love it’s in french and it’s really fun it’s called: LE GRAND LIVRE DE BEBE VEGE by Carol Timperley. I have looked for it in English but no luck. She has a lot of simple vegeterian recipes that as fun and tasty and are listed by recommended ages. So as your baby grows you change the diet and the textures. She mentiones also it’s important to mildly season the food with soft herb, just stay away from salt until they are drinking water freely.
Before I start with fruits I will try some “legumes” like black eyed beens, chickpeas, lima beans and more. It’s better to buy them dry and use water to soak and cook, but it you dont eat them yourself you are better off trying a can of beans and rinsing them really well even soaking them in cold water for a couple of hours the salt should come out.
For fruits I will start with Peaches, apples, pears, cantaloupe and so on. I had read a long time ago that starting with sweet items make the kids really like sweet stuff and possibly not like the rest. So that is what I did and it worked for me.
Also if you find that your baby is having troubles with constipation sometimes too much Rice cereal might do that, try the veggies and fruits that start with a P literally, they will help loosen the stools. Peas, potatoes, parsnip, pears peaches, papaya, pumkins and aPricots too.
Once I am done with veggies, legumes, fruits, then I add meat. With our oldest he was 10 1/2 months and enough teeth so when I introduced meat and I only had to smash it up a bit to make it easier for him to chew chew chew! I am so glad I never had to feed him pulverized meat which just did not apeal to me.
Our 2 oldest boys are good meat eaters too. We struggle with them asking for cookies, Ice cream and other sweet stuff. It’s work every day to present heathly choices, we just have to teach by example and then it’s so rewarding when you go somewhere and they seem to know that their little bodies are needing something good and they ask for fruits and veggies.
A study I read 2 years ago indicated that with toddlers you sometimes have to present them with the same foods 20 times before they will try it. you have to be patient and work with them 1 pea at a time sometimes.
Keep it light and have fun, if it taste good to you it’s more likely to also taste good to them.
Good Luck
You should wait until your baby is 6 months before feeding him solids. The fact that he is interested is not a good reason to start. He may well be interested in chocolate, chilli and red wine, but you shouldn’t give him any of those foods either!
I make all my own baby food. I cook up big batches, blend it and freeze it in icecube trays. That way I always have food for my daughter on hand.
Rice cereal is the best first food. After that, start with pear, apple, pumpkin, sweet potato, zucchini, potato, carrot and banana. Introduce them one at a time and wait at least 4 days before introducing another new food. After those foods you can introduce other fruit and vegetables, then meat after 8-9 months.
The following should be avoided until at least 12 months: tomato, citrus fruit, nuts, seeds, shellfish, eggwhite, strawberries and other berries.
Also, avoid wheat and dairy until 8 months and egg yolk until 10 months.
Good luck!
Hes not old enough yet, He needs to be atlest 1 yr before baby food is tolerated by his tummy So he needs to be on formula til then. And at 8 months he can start to take tiny bits of baby cereal from a spoon held by you. Best if you keep it kinda thick so he gets use to the feel in his mouth. Ive also enclosed a few websites for perfect ages for him to start solids. I hope it helps.
Mom of 2 girls
when the baby starts rolling thier tongue uually around 3 mths ……..
at 4 1/2 mths definately should be fine …..
I would only focus on veggies as fruit is just sugar
6 MONTHS
Id say at about 5-6 months as long as you blend the food. Do not add any sugars or salts, just 100% fruit and veg.
At first he/she will spit the food out and may even gag!
Dont let this put you off!
Just simply put the food back into its mouth to allow him/her to get used to the taste/texture.
Its so important to introduce them to these foods asap as they help with growth and development.
You can get these freezer containers for homemade baby food which allows you to make up a big batch and use it as and when u need to. They look like Ice Cube trays, just a little bigger and gives your baby the right size portions it should be having.
Good Luck x
i would puree’ it and maybe cut it w/ either breast milk or formula, maybe even put a little infant cereal in the mix, it will take some practice but i bet u can get it to the right Constancy, and it will be wonderful for the baby!
I think you can start anytime. once he’s eating the cereal (pablum), go onto veggies, leave fruits for last as a general rule of thumb is that if you start fruits first they will get used to liking only sweet things.
it’s an excellent idea to do your own baby food. no recipe required. babies do not like salt and seasonings added. all you need is a blender/food processor and some water so when you puree the veggies they’re not so thick the baby can’t swallow.
try mixing diff veggies together only after they’ve tried them individually.
and lots of luck! all fruits and all veggies are good. but potatoes have little nutritional value, it’s a cabohydrate, same with peas and corn. and cabbage is know to be gasses so you may want to avoid.
the darker the veggie the better.
now my son HATED the gerber brocolli, even if we put it on the spoon with carrots, somehow someway he would sift it out, and spit out just the brocoli
BUT hope is not lost. at chinese restaurant, young tot, tried “tiger trees” ie, stiryfry brocolli, young tot, love trees to this veddy day.
good luck!
Usually from about 4 months onwards. But you need to make it VERY watery at first, until he/she get the idea. Also, you should only introduce ONE food at a time, experimenting with just the one for up to a week, that way you will know if your baby has any allergy or intolerance to it. If you introduce several at once, and baby has an adverse reaction, it will be a pain in the butt to try and narrow it down to the one food.
I think that’s great that he is showing curiosity at your own mealtimes – it’s natural and a very good sign that he will be receptive to beginning solids.
I always found it beneficial to start them off with a very bland rice cereal (watered down) just before bedtime (evening), and it should fill him up good and aid in him sleeping longer.
Good luck!
Babies should only have milk as their food for the first six months of their life, so giving of solid food should start at the sixth month. However, it can already be introduced as early as the fourth month of life. Solid foods should not be given earlier than this because babies can’t still tolerate solid foods.
Solid foods should be introduced in mashed forms like mashed potatoes, mashed carrots, mashed squash, etc.
It is important to introduce these foods in semi-solid form because it is part of weaning. This continues until the child can already tolerate/manage to eat foods without mashing them.
as long as the food yr feeding yr baby is soft and well blended up; pured then he is deffinantly old enough to be eating “solid” foods. some babies need to be eating more substantual foods before others. if yr baby isnt being satisfied with just their bottle, then its time to introduce these kinds of foods. take a look in yr local super market. they’re now selling baby food in the lil jars designed for 4mths +.
You’re baby is about the right age to start trying single food fruits and veggies. Start with things like apples, peas, carrots, and others. You can mix with a little rice cereal to give it a little more substance.
One of the main reason for starting with single foods is to watch for food allergies. If you only feed your baby carrots and notice a rash or other reaction, it’s very easy to figure out which food is causing problems. I believe it’s recommended to add one new food once a weeks or so.

I waited until about 7 months until I introduced anything solid other than cereal. You should start veggies first though, since once they get a taste for the sweet of fruit, it can ruin their liking for vegetables.
I used a food processor for our baby food and if you are breastfeeding, you can use the breast milk for a little liquid and something they are familiar tasting. I made mashed potatoes with breast milk for my little one. She also liked green beans and carrots.
Stay away from really gassy foods for a while yet (broccoli etc) and make sure you only introduce one new food a week to make sure there are no reactions and to make it easy to pinpoint which food caused the reaction.
start with pureed fruits and veggies only introduce one food at a time to see if there are any allergies. don’t know any websites but research organic baby food or homemade baby food. All fruits and veggies are good for babies,
when he is able to sit up on his own. Since he is starting to show interest, you can try but don’t be surprised if he doesn’t take to it right away. Remember, only add one kind of food every three days, making sure there isn’t an allergic reaction to anything. Google for reciepes. Have fun and be sure to take lots of photos
