Also known as cell phone, cellular telephone or wireless phone, a mobile phone is a short range electronic device used for mobile voice or data communication over a network of various base stations. In addition to the standard voice function a mobile phone has various extra added features. These include sending and receiving emails, packet switching for access to the Internet, gaming, Bluetooth, camera with video recorder, MMS for sending and receiving photos and video and SMS for text messaging. Most of the mobile phones that are used today connect to base stations or cell sites which are further connected to PSTN or Public Switched Telephone Networks. Mobile phones derive power from batteries which are recharged through USB ports. In addition to the battery, the GSM phones require a small microchip called ‘SIM’ or ‘Subscribers Identity Module’ for functioning.
