Help! How can I make a .doc without buying microsoft office products?

I have wordpad and notepad, but they seem to save in .rtf
I can make pdfs of anything.
Can I download and install openofficeand make a .doc in there? But I read that they use their own universal format.
Can Google do it?

Any solutions???

I know zip about comps

and I gotta turn in an assignment by 5:30 in .doc format.
