Don’t take the offer.
However…before you do….if you have an opportunity to talk with them again, I would ask them to illustrate to you how the previous person in the position did.
…and if it is a new position, what basis they concluded that this form of sales tactic would be successful, and what expectations they have.
Then you take that information and see if you can create a different sales opportunity within that company.
To be blunt….phones sales for those types of products…not going to work. What you’ve got to do is find a way to satisfy the need they have…which is…sell more products…and they are obviously willing to pay money to someone to do this.
When I supervised a receptionist, I instructed her to avoid talking with people who sold office supplies on the phone. Too often there were scams involved. Besides, Office Depot and Staples allow you to order on the phone or on-line and they deliver within 24 hours. They also make returns and refunds so simple it is never a problem. How can you compete with that?
I wouldn’t waste your time. If it is large company, they mainly need inbound sales reps, which is, you would take the order when they call you. Cold calling is not a fun job to have.
