Modern offices have become a critical part of a business‘ branding mechanism and are no longer just a place where employees come to work. Employee retention rates also rise as a result in the shift from dreary, sterile layouts to a more modernized, open plans. Modern, open environments make employees more comfortable and consequently, more likely to enjoy their office environment. Making work spaces more collaborative and inviting is on the rise. But what does it really take to get us there?

In today’s era, collaboration plays a much more prominent role in designing and executing projects. This shift in behavior has led to the abandonment of traditional cubicles and private offices. Studies have shown larger, more open spaces tend to foster better group engagement and effort while increasing teamwork and moral. An open seating layout also fosters that quick spread of ideas and information, often leading to enhanced creativity and innovation.

Productivity doesn’t only occur when someone is behind their desk. Employees have been found to be more productive when interacting with co-workers and moving around the office. It is for this reason private offices or enclaves are seen less and less. While it is still important to have a designated area for your own materials and belongings, productivity is equally generated, if not generated more, from engaging and open multi-use spaces. When limiting closed in, private space, more room becomes available for libraries, multi-media centers, and coffee bars. Areas such as these have proven to be effective for group collaboration. Despite these advantages, it’s important that employees behaviors and how they spend their time is carefully evaluated before a new office layout is implemented.

The openness of an office layout is regarded as one of the most appreciated aspects of a modern office. When inside, natural light is a coveted commodity. With fewer walls and cubicles, there’s the potential for more natural light to fill the space. With an office window being one of the most desired aesthetics to an office space, everyone is likely to be satisfied. From an efficiency perspective, this open layout can give quicker and easier access to printers and fax machines because of opportunity for a central, shared printer hub.

While some may balk due to a perceived lack of privacy with an open layout, privacy can still be achieved. Becoming accustomed to open office layouts takes time, however the benefits to be gained in terms of creativity, productivity, innovation, and morale can more than atone for temporary adjustments.
